1. Julius Caesar
Although not usually taught in history classes, there is written evidence that the leader of the Roman republic required daily massages. This probably helped him manage the pain of the severe nervous disorder from which he suffered.
2. Sigmund Freud
Use of massage in therapy sessions is perhaps one of his lesser known contributions to psychology. For Freud, massage served to build a good relationship with his patients, as the act of massaging their hands had a calming effect and increased the patient’s confidence in him as a friend.
3. Samuel L. Jackson
The prominent actor and film producer shared his love for a specific kind of massage with his Instagram followers when he posted a photo of his back completely covered in cups, with the caption: “A lil cupping does a body good!” Cupping is a type of deep-tissue massage that involves placing low-pressure cups on the skin to create suction.
4. Jennifer Aniston
Yet another Hollywood star who went public with her passion for cupping therapy. When she turned up on the red carpet wearing a strapless playsuit, the distinctive circular marks resulting from cupping were clear for everyone to see.
5. Anthony Bourdain
The celebrity chef declared that his perfect vacation includes the services of “an angry Chinese reflexologist”. Reflexology is a massage technique based on the idea that “pressure points” on the hands and feet are linked to specific parts of the human body, and massaging these points serves to restore health to the rest of the body.
6. Princess Diana
Another notable reflexology fan was the late Princess Diana, who visited her personal reflexologist three times a week. Her ex-husband, Princes Charles, is an active supporter of this technique and other complementary therapies.
7. Metallica
When asked how he and his bandmates keep up their energy levels on tour, Metallica singer-guitarist James Hetfield revealed that they have swapped “booze and pills” for reflexology and other “health stuff”. The band is even accompanied by their own reflexologist-”voodoo doctor” on their tours!
8. Cindy Crawford
The international supermodel who started her career in the 80s has retained her stunning looks over time. This may have something to do with her twice-monthly massage, which she refers to as her “biggest beauty indulgence”.
9. Mariah Carey
As with most good things in life, the only problem with massages is that they end too soon, with a typical massage lasting 30 minutes. This was not an issue for Mariah Carey, who spent a lavish sum of $1,500 on a massage that lasted 8 hours!
10. Michael Phelps
The ‘Flying Fish’ has won more Olympic medals than any athlete in history. It’s interesting to note that one of the secrets to this Olympian legend’s success is massage: Phelps reportedly required two massages a day at the peak of his training for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games.
Our body is our most important physical possession. Getting a massage does not only relieve physical problems but also improves mental health! It’s not a surprise that even Hippocrates –the ‘father of modern medicine’ -spoke of the benefits of “rubbing”. Based on its widespread popularity nowadays, massage therapy has certainly withstood the test of time!
